It's set in a wonderful little town filled with wonderful characters who I want to read more about. Alien hand syndrome is one of many brain conditions detailed by David Eagleman in his heady book about the brain, Incognito. It could also be an actual manifestation of alien hand syndrome, a side effect of split brain surgery in which one hand has a mind of its own. Something out of a Jim Carey movie? Perhaps. It’s a ridiculous scenario, a man fighting with himself on a public sidewalk, one arm struggling with the other as the poor man screams at the offending hand over which he seems to have no control. Having read the first five Skulduggery Pleasant books, I was drawn back to this particular book in the series in my attempt to re-read some of the series before the release of the twelfth book ‘Bedlam’ during 2019, and I can without a doubt say that this was a comforting, hilarious and action-packed re-read. However, three powerful mages disturb the peace of this magic world when they attempt to rebirth the Grotesquery, a monster that will be able to open a portal which will usher in long undead gods known ominously as ‘the Faceless Ones.’ So, once again, by teaming up with a ragtag bunch of magicians and fighters–most notably Tanith Low, China Sorrows and Mr Bliss, Valkyrie and Skulduggery battle to prevent the resurrection of said gods on the lunar eclipse. ![]() ![]() Stephenie Edgely has now fully adopted her new persona as Valkyrie Cain and is training hard to perfect her skills in elemental magic. Because there is no way in hell anything in this book is believable. In order for willing suspension of disbelief to happen, there has to be an iota of credibility, some tiny fragment that makes our mind say "this could be true, there's a slight chance this might happen." It sets up for the enjoyment of a book. It is a tool passively exercised by the reader to believe what we read in a book is within the realm of possibility. Let me talk to you for a moment about willing suspension of disbelief. It was hilariously, spectacularly, hysterically unbelievable. In case I haven't made that quite clearĥ. Like what? Why? Where did that come from?Ĥ. Completely needless moment of romance where Mia and Antoine know each other for all of a few pages and all of a sudden kisses. You could skip to the last 15% of the book and know what you need to knowģ. 50% of the book is spent introducing us to the bratty and annoying Mia, the token Japanese girl (she's Japanese so she can tell scary Japanese stories), and the spectacularly unmemorable MiaĢ. Granted, we're only a few days into 2016, but the fact remains that this book is awful. This is the dumbest book I've read this year. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After the death of her grandmother the store was left to Shane, while Sawyer was left with the house.
